Max Hein

Max Hein (born October 7, 1885 in Angerburg , East Prussia , † November 13, 1949 in Schleswig ) was a German historian and archivist .

Life

Hein attended the old town high school (Königsberg) . After graduating from high school, he studied history and German literature at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin from 1905 , interrupted by two semesters at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . With a doctorate in Michael Tangl doctorate he 1909 in Berlin to Dr. phil.

He soon turned to the more recent history of Prussia . In October 1909 he joined the Prussian archive administration, initially as a volunteer in Danzig . From May 1910 he completed the archives course at the Secret State Archives in Berlin. In 1911/12 he was seconded to the Monumenta Germaniae Historica and the Prussian Historical Institute in Rome . Since November 1911 archive assistant and since December 1912 archive assistant, he came in October 1918 as royal archivist at the State Archives in Stettin. The transfer to the Prussian State Archives in Königsberg in April 1921 was decisive for the rest of his life. There he became State Archives Director in October 1927. In addition to his historical research, the administrative work did not step back. With Kurt Forstreuter , he was able to move the archive from the narrow rooms of the castle to the new archive building on Hansaring.

From 1927 to 1945 he was chairman of the historical commission for East and West Prussian state research . In 1944, at his instigation, the most valuable part of the Königsberg State Archives was relocated to West Germany . Later they came to the Göttingen State Archive Camp and from there to Berlin-Dahlem , where they are now part of the Secret State Archive of Prussian Cultural Heritage .

In the post-war period in Germany , Hein headed the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives in Gottorf Castle . He died in office at the age of 64.
