Colon Theater

The Teatro Colón (Spanish for Columbus Theater ) is the most famous theater in Buenos Aires , Argentina .

history

The first Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires was opened on April 27, 1857 on the south-western corner of Plaza de Mayo , where the seat of government of the Argentine President is also located. It had a capacity for 2500 spectators. The building no longer exists, today the main building of the Banco de la Nación Argentina is located here.

Today's Teatro Colón, located between Plaza Lavalle and Avenida 9 de Julio , was built between 1889 and 1908 by the architects Francesco Tamburini, Angelo Ferrari, Victor Meano and Julio Dormal. It opened on May 25, 1908 with the opera Aida by Giuseppe Verdi . The theater has 2500 seats and 1000 standing places.

The main entrance of the theater is on Plaza Lavalle and not, as one might assume, on Avenida 9 de Julio, the boulevard of Buenos Aires. This is because this did not exist when the Teatro Colón was built; It was not completed until 1937. The theater had been closed for renovation work since November 1st, 2006 and should reopen on May 25th, 2008 for the centenary. Due to the precarious financial situation of the city, the date could not be kept. It was finally reopened on May 24, 2010, to mark the bicentenary of the Argentine independence movement.
