The Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires (Eng .: Philharmonic Orchestra Buenos Aires) is an Argentine orchestra based in Buenos Aires . It was founded in 1946 and is also the house orchestra of the Teatro Colón , the main opera house in Buenos Aires. The current general music director and main conductor is Enrique Diemecke .

history

The Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires was founded in 1946 as the Orquesta Sinfónica del Teatro Municipal (German: Symphonic Orchestra at the City Theater) and gave its first concert on May 21, 1947. The first conductor was Lamberto Baldi , his successor was Jaime Pahissa . In 1948 the orchestra changed its name to Orquesta Sinfónica de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires . In the same year Herbert von Karajan conducted the orchestra twice. In 1953 the orchestra moved to the Teatro Colón and since 1958 it has had its current name.

In the following decade the orchestra achieved international renown and performed with well-known national and international soloists. Among them were pianists like Alfred Brendel , Martha Argerich , Lazar Berman , Alfred Cortot , Byron Janis , Rudolf Firkušný , Andor Foldes , Ivo Pogorelich , Nelson Freire , Bruno Gelber , Arthur Rubinstein , Jean-Yves Thibaudet , Rubén González , Friedrich Gulda , Rudolf Buchbinder and Andras Schiff ; Well-known violinists such as Gidon Kremer , Joshua Bell , Shlomo Mintz , Alberto Lysy , Ruggiero Ricci , Yehudi Menuhin , Itzhak Perlman , Midori , Gil Shaham , Henryk Szeryng , Salvatore Accardo , Leonid Kogan and Cho-Liang Lin ; Among the cellists who played with the orchestra were Pablo Casals , Mstislav Rostropovich , Mischa Maisky , Natalie Clein , Sol Gabetta, and Yo-Yo Ma ; Singers like Marian Anderson , José Carreras , Régine Crespin , Plácido Domingo , Luciano Pavarotti , Samuel Ramey , Jose Van Dam and Frederica von Stade as well as other artists.

Numerous conductors have also worked with the orchestra, including the aforementioned Karajan, Charles Dutoit , Daniel Barenboim , Wilhelm Furtwängler , Sergiu Celibidache , Sir Georg Solti , Sir Thomas Beecham , Charles Dutoit, Lorin Maazel , Zubin Mehta , Rudolf Kempe , Clemens Krauss , Pierre Boulez , Igor Stravinsky , Malcolm Sargent , Antal Doráti , Ernest Ansermet , Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos , Eduardo Mata , Aaron Copland , Krzysztof Penderecki , Karl Richter , Luis Antonio García Navarro , Michel Corboz , Leopold Hager , Ferdinand Leitner , Jean Fournet , Eiji Ōue , Moshe Atzmon , Serge Baudo and Christof Escher .

Tours

The orchestra has so far performed three European tours: 1992, 1994 and 1996. a. Germany, England, Spain, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and Austria. Venues were u. a. the Berlin Philharmonic , the Barbican Center in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The musicians also tour frequently in their own country as well as in other countries in South America.
