Walter Beringer

Walter Beringer (born February 25, 1928 in Darmstadt ; † March 23, 2016 in Nelson , British Columbia ) was a Canadian ancient historian of German origin.

Life

Walter Beringer, son of a pastor, attended elementary school in Schaafheim and the grammar schools in Darmstadt and Heidelberg. From January 1944 to January 1945 he was an air force helper . After graduating from high school in 1947, he studied Protestant theology at the University of Heidelberg and at the Bethel Church University . After four semesters, he moved to the University of Cologne , where he studied Classical Philology and Ancient History. His mentor was the ancient historian Lothar Wickert . After a few semesters at the University of Frankfurt am Main , he went to the University of TübingenWhere he at 1956 Joseph Vogt with a thesis on the Greek social history doctorate was. For the academic year 1956/1957 he received a scholarship from the British Council. In the summer of 1957 he returned to Tübingen and worked as a research assistant at the history seminar. In 1958 he passed the state examination for the higher teaching post in the subjects of Latin, Greek and Protestant religious studies.

During his time as an assistant, Beringer spent the academic year 1962/1963 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and completed a graduate degree in Mycenaean epigraphy ( Linear B ) and his specialty, early Greek social history. He then took a temporary position as Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley , which he held until the summer of 1965. Since July 1, 1965, he worked at York University in Toronto as an assistant professor . He retired on June 30, 1993 and moved to Nelson, British Columbia . He died there on March 23, 2016.

In addition to his academic teaching, Beringer dealt with early Greek social history in his research. In addition to his Tübingen dissertation Studies on the Image of Unfree People in Greek Literature from the Beginnings to the End of Classical Drama , he published essays and reviews in German and English. As early as 1954, while still a student, he had published the extensive article Princeps iuventutis in Paulys Realencyclopadie der classical antiquity .
