Walter Braeuer

Walter Braeuer (born October 5, 1906 in Hanau , † March 12, 1992 in Reinbek ) was Professor of Economics and Thünen researcher.

Life

Braeuer studied economics in Berlin and Mannheim. In 1934 he received his doctorate from the University of Frankfurt with a thesis on “Cartel and economic activity. The controversy in five decades ”. In 1927 Braeuer joined the SPD , in 1930 he switched to the KPD . In the summer of 1933 Braeuer was taken into protective custody on suspicion of producing communist propaganda . After receiving his doctorate, he emigrated to Switzerland , in 1936 he moved to Paris , where he worked in his brother's company. On December 4, 1936, Braeuer was revoked his German citizenship, and in 1937 his doctorate from the University of Frankfurt.

At the beginning of the Second World War , Braeuer was interned and arrested by the Wehrmacht in Chalon-sur-Saône on September 12, 1941 . On November 24, 1942, he was sentenced to seven years in prison by the Kassel Higher Regional Court. Braeuer spent most of his imprisonment in Ziegenhain ; on May 3, 1945 he was liberated by the Red Army .

On September 15, 1945, Braeuer became a research assistant at the Thünen Archive at the University of Rostock . In autumn 1946 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on Thünen's wage formula. From October 1947, Braeuer was a full professor for statistics at the University of Rostock. In May 1950 he moved from the GDR to the FRG because he was hostile to Stalinism . In the first ten years in Germany, Braeuer worked primarily as a translator. In 1960 he was given a teaching position at the University of Marburg with funds for the integration of the scientists who had fled the Soviet Zone . He worked there until his retirement in 1972.
