Walter Braun (born March 5, 1925 ) is a former German soccer player. He played in 1951/52 for the Berlin BSG unit Pankow in the GDR Oberliga first division football.

Athletic career

For the 1951/52 season, the company sports community Einheit Pankow was incorporated as an additional 19th team in the GDR Oberliga, the top division in GDR football, without any athletic qualifications . This was in response to a request from the GDR leadership to install a second East Berlin team in the upper league alongside BSG Motor Oberschöneweide in order to strengthen the sporting reputation of the "capital of the GDR". In the preseason, two East Berlin teams from the league were relegated with SG Lichtenberg 47 and VfB Pankow . The football section of VfB Pankow was integrated into the BSG unit Pankow. However, since several VfB players did not want to switch to the BSG, numerous new players had to be integrated into the team, including Walter Braun, who had previously played in the fourth-class East Berlin state class for SG Buchholz.

The 1951/52 season showed that the newly formed Pankower team was not suitable for the first division. Although 32 players were used, the BSG unit was determined early on as relegated. Braun was first used in the 10th league game and then played all the other 27 point games in which he was always used as a right runner with one exception . In this position he also played the 1952 final of the GDR soccer cup. Although Pankow had lost the semi-final game against Lok Stendal with 0: 1, the team moved into the final after Stendal was disqualified because of the unauthorized use of a player. However , the BSG unit had no chance against the runner-up SG Volkspolizei Dresden and lost 3-0.

Then Braun played with Einheit Pankow in the second-rate GDR league until 1953 , after which he returned to Buchholz , where he played football with the SG in the third-rate Berlin district league for a few years .
