Life

The son of civil engineer Ernst Cipa and Marie Kusz studied geology at the Technical University of Aachen and the University of Freiburg . After successful diploma examination in 1955 he became at Aachen Technical University with a theme for Applied Geophysics (Dissertation: Geomagnetic survey of some lava flows and Tuffschlote in the front Eifel ) for Dr. rer. nat. PhD .

Cipa began his professional career in 1955 as an operations assistant at Deutsche Erdöl AG (DEA) and also studied economics . In 1961 he moved from DEA to Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG (GBAG) in Essen , where he was commissioned to set up a department for crude oil and natural gas. He gained practical experience in the mineral oil business, became an authorized signatory in 1964 and one year later rose to the board of directors of the corporation, which has now been renamed Gelsenberg. From 1969 he was Friedrich Funcke's successor as chairman of the board. After the merger of Gelsenberg Petrol AG with Veba Chemie AG to form Veba Oel AG , he left the company in July 1975.

In August 1975, at the instigation of Jürgen Ponto , the spokesman for the board of directors of Dresdner Bank , Cipa joined the board of directors of AEG-Telefunken as director and deputy chairman. In July 1976, after Hans Groebe moved to the supervisory board, he took on the role of chairman of the board. However, he was unsuccessful in restructuring the company. AEG's group debt continued to grow, so that in January 1980 he resigned from his position on the board.

Walter Cipa has been married to Eva Mayer since 1958. The couple is childless. In his youth, Cipa, a “manager with a hard will and an iron fist,” was an amateur boxer in the heavyweight division.
