Walter Darnehl (born December 11, 1924 ) is a former German soccer player. For the VfB Pankow and the BSG unit Pankow played from 1950 to 1952 first division football in the GDR .

Athletic career

Walter Darnehl was one of the first football players to get football going again in Berlin after the end of the Second World War . This happened in sports communities or sports groups (SG). Darnehl first joined the SG Pankow-Nord , and played from 1948/49 for SG Nord , with which he rose to the Berlin City League in the first season . The SG was founded in the 1949/50 season in the VfL Nord Berlin, but rose immediately with Darnehl as a striker back from the city league.

When the Association of Berliner Ballspielvereine introduced the contract player system in 1950 , the GDR sports management took this as an opportunity to separate their soccer teams from the entire Berlin game operations and to integrate them into the GDR league system. This also affected VfB Pankow, who had to compete in the highest GDR soccer league, the DS-Oberliga , for the 1950/51 season . Since several VfB players refused to make this move, several new players had to be recruited, including Walter Darnehl.

However, VfB had not been able to put together a team suitable for the first division, because only two wins were achieved in 34 point games, and at the end of the 1950/51 season the team had a goal difference of 29: 131 as bottom of the table. Darnehl had been called up in 23 point games and had only scored one goal. After the end of the season, the company sports community (BSG) Einheit Pankow took over a large part of the VfB soccer team. Although the VfB was relegated from the Oberliga, the BSG unit was incorporated as an additional participant in the DS-Oberliga of the 1951/52 season without athletic qualifications. Darnehl was again in the squad, but could only play eleven point games until November 1951. He was initially used as a defender before he was able to resume his usual position in attack from the fifth day of the game. It wasn't enough for a goal. Due to his failure, Darnehl also missed participation in the final of the GDR soccer cup, which the BSG unit lost 3-0 against Dynamo Dresden .

Despite participating in the cup final, Einheit Pankow had a bad league season as its predecessor VfB. With only five wins and a goal difference of 38:94, the BSG also finished last in the table. In the season 1952/53 unit Pankow was passed through by the GDR League . Darnehl was still there and played with the team in 1953/54 in the third-rate district league . There he was already 30 years old and did not return to higher-class football.
