Walter Davis (blues musician)
Walter Davis (born March 1, 1912 in Grenada , Mississippi , † October 22, 1963 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was an American blues pianist and singer.
Walter Davis was a leading exponent of the St. Louis blues in the 1930s , along with Roosevelt Sykes and Henry Townsend . Between 1931 and 1941 Davis recorded over 160 titles. Several more recordings followed from 1946 to 1952.
Walter Davis' best-known pieces include Come Back Baby (which made Ray Charles a top hit in 1950), Angel Child (1949 hit for Memphis Slim ), Think You Need A Shot , Pet Cream Blues and Ashes In My Whiskey . Davis titles have been edited by BB King , Fred McDowell , Eddie Boyd , Champion Jack Dupree, and others.
After a stroke in the 1950s, Davis was active as a preacher. He died in St. Louis in 1963. In 2005 he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame .
