Walter Georg Nowak

Walter Georg Nowak (born February 11, 1925 in Opole ) is a diplomat of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Life

Walter Georg Nowak studied foreign studies in Berlin after graduating from high school in 1943 . From 1944 he did military service. At the end of the Second World War he was an ensign in the naval artillery and then fell into British captivity . From 1946 Nowak studied history, German, philosophy, geography and geology at the Humboldt University , later at the Free University in Berlin. In 1954 he received his doctorate in philosophy and passed the entrance examination for teaching at secondary schools. He was a trainee lawyer and graduate student at the traditional French grammar school in Berlin and also had a teaching position at the German University of Politics in 1954/55 .

In 1957 he joined the German Foreign Service. In 1958/59 he was attaché at the German embassy in London and from 1960 to 1963 legation counselor at the embassy in Nicosia , in particular responsible for culture and public relations. After the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, there were critical reports about his political public relations work by Soviet intelligence services (Radio Moscow). From 1968 to 1973 he was head of the German diplomatic mission in Beirut. From 1973 to 1976 he was first counselor and permanent representative of the ambassador in Tehran . Subsequently, he was head of division in the Foreign Office responsible for North-South Dialogue and International Economic Cooperation. From 1978 he was inspector of the German Foreign Service. From 1985 to 1990 he was finally ambassador to Saudi Arabia .

In August 2004 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class.
