Walter Hammer (lawyer)

Walter Hammer (born August 5, 1924 , † October 13, 2000 ) was a German lawyer in church service. From 1966 to 1989 he was President of the Church Chancellery (since 1983: Church Office ) of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD).

In the service of the EKD

Walter Hammer served the EKD for 31 years, first as a finance officer, then as head of the branch office of the church chancellery in Berlin . In 1966 Hammer was appointed president of the EKD church chancellery. After 23 years at the head of the chancellery and church office, he retired in 1989. Hammer supported the efforts to reform the basic order of the EKD in the early 1970s and did a lot for the East-West dialogue.
