Walter Hartel

Walter Hartel (born April 18, 1942 ) is a former German football player who was active in the 1960s for Lokomotive Stendal in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of GDR football .

Athletic career

In 1960, at the age of 18, Walter Hartel played for the first time in the 1st team of the company sports association (BSG) Lokomotive Stendal. This season (calendar year game rhythm) the Stendal had to compete in the second-rate GDR league after their relegation in the previous season . Hartel played a major role in the immediate resurgence as a striker with 24 appearances in the 26 point games and his four goals. Also in 1960 he was part of the squad of the GDR junior national team , but was not used in the official international matches. In the following league season 39 games were played between January 1961 and June 1962, as GDR football returned to the autumn-spring rhythm from 1962. Hartel was called up in 35 point games, scored two goals and thus consolidated his position as a regular player. Since the Stendal again failed to keep up, Hartel played in 1962/63 again in the second division. This time, too, he played a major role in the immediate return to the league, because he was only absent from one of the 26 GDR league games and, with his eleven goals, was one of the Stendal's most successful attackers. For the new league season 1965/66 Hartel was firmly planned as a striker with coach Martin Schwendler , but Hartel injured himself after the second match day and could only be used sporadically in five league games in the second half of the season. In the season 1964/65 Hartel belonged only to the squad of the 2nd team of Lok Stendal, which played in the fourth class district class Magdeburg . In May 1965 he was drafted into the National People's Army for 18 months . After completing his military service, he returned to Lok Stendal, where he played four league games in 1966/67. He then ended his career as a football player in the high-performance field.
