Athletic career

As a young player, Walter Heintz achieved early successes, winning the GDR youth football championship with SC Turbine Erfurt in 1965, and the junior championship with FC Rot-Weiß-Erfurt in 1967. With the Army Sports Association (ASG) forward Cottbus , he played his first games in the second-rate GDR league in the 1968/69 season . After he was used in all 30 league games during this season, he was only used 19 and 12 times in 1969/70 and 1970/71. After a total of 61 GDR league games in which he had scored seven goals, Heintz returned to FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt for the 1971/72 season. There, too, he initially played again in the GDR league, as the FC had just been relegated from the league. In the immediate resurgence, Heintz was involved with 20 of 22 point games and seven of eight promotion games. For the league season 1972/73 he was nominated for the player base, but was only used in three point games. In addition, he played with the 2nd team in the GDR league, where he was used 15 times. 1973/74 Heintz played exclusively in the 2nd team, for which 16 of the 22 point games played. After only three league games and 27 GDR league games, Heintz left Rot-Weiß Erfurt in the summer of 1974 and joined the GDR league team Zentronik Sömmerda . There he was active for four seasons until 1978 and completed 63 games of the 88 point games played during this period. With 20 hits, he was one of the reliable goal scorers. At the age of 30, Walter Heintz ended his career as a football player in the higher leagues.
