Walter Jänicke (born January 21, 1952 ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper. In the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , he played in the 1970s and 1980s for Halleschen FC Chemie and BSG Motor Suhl .

Athletic career

Until 1970 Walter Jänicke was in the gate of the Halle company sports community (BSG) Lokomotive, with which he last played in the fourth-class Halle district class. At the beginning of the 1970/71 season he switched to the regional football focus, the Halleschen FC Chemie (HFC). There the only 1.78 m tall goalkeeper was assigned to the second team, which was represented in the second-rate GDR league . Of the 30 league games played, Jänicke played 20 games in 1970/71. In addition, he was used at the end of the season in the last four league games of the league team. 1971/72 Jänicke belonged again to the squad of the HFC II and kept there with 14 missions in now 20 GDR league games his regular place. Since the regular goalkeeper of the first team, Helmut Brade , was absent several times this season, Jänicke represented him in ten league games. Also in 1972/73 Brade had to pause for a long time, so that Jänicke came into play in twelve league matches. As a result, he was only used six times in the second team. At the end of the season, the first team had to relegate to the GDR league, which meant that the second team was downgraded to the third-rate district league . The HFC immediately managed to return to the league, where Jänicke was only involved with eight appearances. In his fifth season at HFC, Jänicke was nominated for the league team, but was in the shadows behind Brade and junior national player Jürgen Pahl with only five league appearances . Since HFC II was still represented in the district league, Jänicke played in 1974/75 most of the time in third class. 1975/76 was his last season with HFC. He was no longer part of the upper division squad and was only used in ten point games of the second team, which had meanwhile been promoted back to the GDR league.

For the 1976/77 season Walter Jänicke moved to the GDR league club Motor Suhl. There, too, he was initially only number two in goal behind Klaus Müller and played only nine of the 22 league games. In 1977/78 he managed to overtake Müller (9) with thirteen point games. After Jänicke had stood in the gate of BSG Motor in the first six league games at the beginning of the 1978/79 season, he was drafted into the National People's Army for 18 months . At the beginning of the 1980/81 season he was again eligible to play for Motor Suhl and was used in ten GDR league games. Motor won the season and took part in the promotion games to the league, but did not make it. Jänicke was used in four of the eight qualifying games. In the following three seasons Jänicke played 45 of the 66 GDR league games and again took part in the promotion round in 1984. Again he was used in four matches and was involved with a total of 16 games in the rise of the Suhl team. In the league season 1984/85 Klaus Müller was again absolutely number one in the goal of Motor Suhl, only in two league games Jänicke came into play. Suhl was relegated to the GDR league again after a year, and Jänicke remained only substitute goalkeeper for the next two seasons with a total of three appearances. After the 1986/87 season he said goodbye to competitive sports and let his football career in the district league with the BSG Roboton Zella-Mehlis end. Between 1970 and 1987 he had 34 league games and 150 appearances in the GDR league.
