He started his career in 1976 at General Reinsurance Corporation in Zurich. After assignments in the USA, Great Britain and Italy, he took over responsibility for the company's marketing in Europe. In 1983 he and his wife, Daphne Kielholz-Pestalozzi, opened an art gallery and framing shop. In 1986 a second gallery was opened. In the same year he joined the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (SKA), today's Credit Suisse , where he was responsible for customer relationships with large insurance companies within the Multinational Services department.
In 1989, Kiehlholz joined Swiss Re. In January 1993 he was appointed to the management and was President of the Management from 1997 to 2002. Kielholz is considered to be a puller in the Zurich finance industry and among the business freelance in Zurich. Under his leadership, both the Credit Suisse share price and Swiss Re suffered massive losses.
Until mid-2015, Kielholz was President of the European Financial Services Roundtable (EFR), which provides statements from the financial sector on current issues in Europe, and Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Institute of International Finance (IIF), the world's only association of financial institutions.

As from 1998 to 2005, Kielholz has been a member of the International Business Leader Advisory Council (IBLAC) since 2009, an advisory group consisting primarily of presidents and CEOs from major international companies that offers support to the Mayor of Shanghai . In 2009 he also became a member of the International Advisory Panel (IAP) of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), which advises the MAS on strategies and reforms in the country's financial sector.
Kielholz is President of the Board of Trustees of the Swiss Re Foundation, founded in 2012. He then co-founded (1970) the International St. Gallen Symposium (ISC) at the University of St. Gallen and a member of the Board of Trustees of the St. Gallen Foundation.
In his spare time he devotes himself to sailing, skiing, tennis, golf, reading, opera, concerts and the performing arts. He is president of the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft, the owner of the Kunsthaus Zürich .
Kielholz is also committed to art as an integral part of modern corporate culture . He played a key role in building up and developing the modern art collection in Swiss Re buildings around the world. The collection includes around 4,000 works. He has also promoted the use of modern architecture as part of corporate culture, for example with the Swiss Re Center for Global Dialogue in Rüschlikon / Zurich, the building at 30 St Mary Ax in London ("Gurke") or the "Swiss Re Next" building on Mythenquai in Zurich, which is scheduled for completion in 2017.
