Lüner SV, until 1964

The city of Lünen is adjacent to the northern edge of Dortmund . Lüner SV's rise to become the most successful club in today's (2007) Unna district began in the early sixties. In the 1960/61 season the LSV was champion of the state league and rose to the highest amateur class in Westphalia. Two years later, in 1962/63 , Lünen also won the championship in the amateur league of Westphalia, season 2. As the only team of 450 contract or amateur teams in Westphalia, the LSV remained undefeated. In 28 games, 23 wins and 5 draws were achieved. In the final of the Westphalia Championship, coach Werner Nagerski's team beat VfB 03 Bielefeld with 3-1 goals in front of 18,000 spectators. The subsequent decision for the West German title against Niederrheinmeister Homberger SV was won with 2-1 goals in front of 17,000 spectators. The West German championship meant promotion to the newly created Regionalliga West for the 1963/64 round.

This round also included the games for the German amateur championship against Blau-Weiß 90 Berlin and VfL Wolfsburg. Walter Liebich was on duty for Lüner SV in all of these games. The year in the Regionalliga West, 1963/64 , brought Lünen back to reality. After the nine starting games, Lüner SV was bottom of the table with 0:18 points without winning any points. The first double point win came on October 27, 1963 with a 2-1 home win in the Schwansbell stadium against VfB Bottrop . Walter Liebich scored the winning goal with a converted hand penalty in the 88th minute. In this round he played 33 games and scored 10 goals. After relegation, Liebich moved in the summer of 1964 to the Regionalliga Süd for KSV Hessen Kassel , the champions of the southern season, but who had failed in the promotion round to the Bundesliga at Hannover 96.

KSV Hessen Kassel, 1964 to 1971

Despite the renowned trainer Herbert Widmayer , Kassel failed to defend its title in the 1964/65 round. Although the new champions and promoted Bayern Munich was defeated on August 19, 1964 in the Aue Stadium in front of 23,000 spectators with 3-1 goals, Liebich fought thrilling duels with Rudolf Nafziger as a left defender . At the end of the round, the Hessians were in 5th place in the table. Even with the striker Kurt Haseneder in 1965/66 the leap to the top of the table did not succeed. The KSV defense was supported by Walter Liebich, goalkeeper Karl Loweg , middle runner Heinrich Dittel and right runner Hans Michel . Including the 1969/70 round, the ex-Lüner belonged to the main formation of Hessen Kassel. When in his seventh year in North Hesse with coach Heinz Baas in the 1970/71 round the advance to 3rd place in the table succeeded, Liebich was only used once as a substitute. The 32-year-old came on on September 20, 1970 in a 3-1 home win against Rüsselsheim in the 75th minute and thus ended his career in the regional league. For Kassel Liebich played 165 games with 13 goals in the Regionalliga Süd from 1964 to 1971. In his first season in Kassel, on January 16, 1965, he experienced the special atmosphere of the DFB Cup in front of 30,000 spectators in Kassel. In the 2-0 defeat against Hamburger SV after goals from Uwe Seeler and Gert Dörfel , the local spectators were enthusiastic about the KSV-Elf. Liebich and Vollmer formed the defender couple. In the 1967 DFB Cup, he played in the qualification for the first main round against Eintracht Frankfurt on December 31, 1966, where after a 1: 2 half-time deficit he achieved a 6: 2 win in front of 12,000 spectators against the Bundesliga club. Liebich kept the Eintracht right winger Oskar Lotz in check. On January 14, 1967, Werder Bremen defied a 2-2 draw in Kassel. In the Weser Stadium, SV Werder won the replay on January 25th with 2-1 goals after extra time. In this dispute, Liebich showed himself to be a match for Werder's Gerhard Zebrowski wing .

Amateur national team, 1963 to 1964

Walter Liebich played 13 international matches as a player in Lüner SV. In the nine international matches of the DFB amateurs in 1963, DFB coach Helmut Schön used the Lüner defender in all matches. Outstanding for Liebich were the England tournament in May 1963 with the final against Scotland and the two German-German elimination games in September 1963 for the 1964 Olympics and the three games in Tokyo in October 1963. From May 24th to June 2nd, 1964, he took part again in a tournament in Italy with the DFB team and moved into the final again. After the 1-1 draw, the German team was declared the tournament winner by drawing lots. With this game, Walter Liebich said goodbye after 13 games with three goals from the amateur national team and became a contract player for Hessen Kassel.

End of career

In the summer of 1971 he moved to KSV Baunatal . His former teammate at Hessen Kassel, Hans Michel, was a trainer there. In the very first round, he was promoted to the Hessen League. He ended his active career in Baunatal.
