Walter Lingg

Walter Lingg (born August 31, 1925 in Au im Bregenzerwald ; † February 12, 2000 in Feldkirch ) was an Austrian hotelier, tourist and politician ( ÖVP ). He is considered to be one of the pioneers and promoters of the emerging tourism in the Bregenz Forest in the post-war period and was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament from 1964 to 1979 - and years later his son of the same name .

youth

Lingg grew up with his eight siblings in Au in the district of Lugen, after primary school in Au-Rehmen he attended the commercial school in Lustenau . From 1941 to 1943 he worked in his parents' blacksmith and hardware trade until he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and military service from 1943 to 1945 . After several years of service in the central section of the Eastern Front , he was taken prisoner by the British in Hamburg in May 1945. After returning home at the end of 1945, he worked again in his parents' hardware store until 1947.

tourism

After marrying Katharina Berlinger, he took over the management of the Hotel Krone in Au in 1947 . The hotel, which was badly affected by the economic crisis and wartime, has been continuously renovated and expanded, making it one of the largest and most comfortable hotels in the Bregenzerwald. He recognized early on the opportunities that tourism offered for the region's development and prosperity. Due to its predictive and future-oriented attitude, the "Krone" took on a pioneering role and was, for example, one of the first hotels in the Bregenz Forest whose rooms had their own bathroom. In 1963 he co-founded a local ski lift (the first in the Bregenz Forest) and the Diedamskopfbergbahnen in neighboring Schoppernau. In addition, he assumed responsibility as:

  • Chamber Council of the Tourism and Accommodation Section of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Commerce (1965–1985)
  • Deputy Chairman of the Tourism Section of the Vorarlberg Chamber of Commerce (1969–1985)
  • Co-founder and first chairman of the Bregenzerwald regional planning association (1970–1985)
  • Chairman of the Au Tourist Office
  • Chairman of the Bregenzerwald Transport Association (1957–1974 and 1976–1984)

In 1985 he handed over the business of the hotel to his son, Walter Lingg .
