Walter Mannchen

Fritz Julius Walter Mannchen (born November 17, 1905 in Magdeburg , † April 5, 1972 in Freiberg ) was a German chemist and university professor.

Life

Walter Mannchen passed his Abitur in 1926 in Breslau , after which he studied chemistry, metallurgy and X-ray structure theory at the TH Breslau . In 1930 he obtained his diploma and began working as an assistant at the Institute for Physical Chemistry at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . In 1933 he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD. From 1935 to 1946 he worked as a chemist and head of the research laboratory for light metals at IG Farben in Aken . In 1947 he was involved in the construction of the magnesite works in Aken as the responsible technician, and later became technical manager and deputy works manager there.

In 1952 he was appointed professor of physical chemistry and director of the institute at the Bergakademie Freiberg . From 1955 to 1959 he worked as vice dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and supplementary subjects, and until 1959 he was acting head of the Institute for Organic Chemistry and Chemistry of Coal and Oils. In 1962 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin . In March 1967 he became head of the chemistry department, and after the third university reform in the GDR in 1968 he became director of the newly established chemistry section. He held this position for a year. On September 1, 1971, he was retired.

Walter Mannchen died in Freiberg in 1972. His grave is in the Donatsfriedhof .
