Life

Walter Nickel was an artist from Roßdorf in the Rhön . He was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR (VBK-DDR). In 1971, 1975, 1979 and 1984 he took part in the district art exhibition in Suhl . His work was awarded the Johannes R. Becher Medal in 1981 and 1988 .

"Together with the artist Herbert Lubich, Nickel wrested a piece of German and Roßdorf history from oblivion: The" Battle of the Fog "between Prussia and Bavaria on July 4, 1866, in which 617 people died after the end of the German-German war, raged all over close to Nickel's house. The museum for this, in the local manor at the castle, enjoys supraregional recognition, as does the "Wagner-Stube" and the "Small Gallery" at the same location. "
