Walter Proebster

Walter Proebster (born April 2, 1928 in Mannheim ) is a German electrical engineer, computer scientist and university professor.

Life

Proebster studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Munich and graduated in 1951. After that, he was part of the development team, under the direction of Hans Piloty and Robert Sauer the tube computer PERM designed and constructed. In 1956 Proebster received his doctorate on the design and construction of the PERM.

In 1956, Proebster moved to the IBM research laboratory in Zurich , where he worked on thin film memory and was the first to experimentally prove switching processes in the nanosecond range that were around 100 times faster than the currently common ferrite cores.

From 1962 to 1964, Proebster the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights ( Westchester County , New York ), Director of the Department of Experimental equipment. He then became director of the IBM development laboratories in Böblingen . In 1972 Proebster became honorary professor at the University of Karlsruhe and in 1989 professor at the Technical University of Munich.
