Walter Schätzle

Walter Schätzle (born September 16, 1927 in Saarbrücken , † July 27, 2007 in Homburg ) was a German physician.

Life

Schätzle was born in 1927 as the son of a savings bank director. After graduating from the state high school in Saarbrücken, Schätzle was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and military service in 1939 and became a prisoner of war. After his return he studied human medicine in Homburg, Nancy and Paris from 1947 to 1952 . In 1952/53 he was a volunteer assistant at the Histological Institute of the University of Saarland and was awarded his dissertation in 1953 with the dissertation “The seasonal changes in the Teleostian islands. Contribution to the cytobiology of the endocrine pancreas ”. From 1954 to 1959 he was assistant and senior assistant at the Histological Institute, then until 1963 scientific assistant at the Homburg ENT University Clinic. In 1963 he qualified as a professor with “histological, histochemical and clinical examinations in various forms of chronic maxillary sinusitis” and received the license to teach.

On January 1, 1965, Schätzle switched to the ENT University Clinic in Göttingen as a senior physician . Research stays took him to the United States and Switzerland . In 1968 he was appointed adjunct professor. In 1974 he was appointed full professor of ENT medicine. He also became head of the ENT clinic in Homburg. From 1981 to 1983 he was Vice Dean of the Clinical Medicine Department. In 1989 he was the first in Germany to introduce bone-anchored epitheses and hearing aids . In 1995 he retired.

Research priorities

In his early years as a doctor, Schätzle mainly researched the histology and histochemistry of the islet apparatus of the pancreas . After his work at the histological institute and the decision to train as a specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine, Schätzle was one of the first to recognize the importance of histochemistry as a new field of research in ENT medicine. Investigations into the reduction of inner ear vessel damage by drugs followed.
