Walter Schmid (composer)

Walter Schmid (born June 30, 1906 in Flawil ; †  August 23, 1983 in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss composer , choir conductor and teacher . Promoting children in singing , he was also an art teacher . He is best known as the composer of the St. Galler Lied, a regional anthem of Eastern Switzerland , which he composed in 1953 to a text by Sales Huber . His works have been published by Hug Musikverlage .

Life

Walter Schmid was the son of Johann August Schmid and Gertrud nee Hanselmann. The father was a teacher who taught the child to play the piano. His mother used to sing with him. In training on teacher training college of Rorschach the school choir accompanied on the piano, and soon he conducted the student orchestra. When he finished this school in 1926, he became a teacher in Stein in Toggenburg . In this mountain village he ran the Protestant comprehensive school with 68 students, and he was the organist in the church. He developed further during a visit to singing weeks with the song composer Adolf Seifert and the German musicologist Konrad Ameln . From 1931 Walter Schmid was a teacher in Walenstadt. During this time he began to write songs himself. These were simple psalm settings with organ accompaniment, and he wrote song booklets for school lessons that soon found their way into other school rooms. Walter Schmid continued his education in harmony and form at the Zurich Music Academy. Soldier songs were written during the Second World War. The Gränzwacht was awarded first prize in the competition of the Swiss Broadcast Service. In 1970 Schmid received the recognition award from the city of St. Gallen.
