Walter Sieben , artist name Tony Weller (born August 9, 1936 in Aachen ) is a German composer , singer and band leader who was mainly active in the 1950s and 1960s.

life and career

At the age of 17, Sieben had finished his education. He had studied singing and baritone in Cologne and at the same time completed his training on the contrabass in Aachen. After this training he played in the orchestra with his father. Through this work he gained the necessary routine and experience through daily appearances as a professional musician.

Since 1955 he developed into a solo singer and had his first appearance in 1956 in Hamburg's "Cherie" on Hamburg's Steindamm . Through the mediation of the arranger Heinz Woezel from Kurt Edelhagen , he made test recordings at Telefunken. They were looking for a successor for the Teldec star Horst Winter . Under the pseudonym Tony Weller, a discovery by Woezel, the young singer developed into the "German Pat Boone ".

Until 1957 he worked for the WDR , where he worked as a singer under his name Walter Sieben, after which he switched to the record company Teldec (Telefunken / Decca). At the age of 20 he got a five-year contract with his new record company and sang Pat Boone's songs for the German record market. The recordings were made in Hamburg and his new artist name was born. He now called himself Tony Weller, went on tour with the then famous pop stars such as Vico Torriani , Lys Assia and Margot Eskens and made numerous records with songs by American stars. Sieben was very successful as a Weller and worked for Teldec for 10 years.

Hits such as the theme song For Us Two for the well-known Quaker film Alluring Temptation from 1956 with Gary Cooper emerged .

After his record career subsided after the jazz band The Nicols and various appearances in southern Germany and successes in the US airbases , Martin Böttcher rediscovered him in 1963 for the Ariola record under the arrangement of James Last . Later he produced several records in Holland for Philips under his birth name, with the participation in the choirs of Botho Lucas and Günter Kallmann in u. a. Cologne and Berlin recording studios.

Bear Family Records released some of Tony Weller's songs from this period as CD on October 31, 2005 under the title Irgendwo im Fremdland aka Pat Boone Hits in German .

After various appearances with his own band in the 1970s and 1980s, Walter Sieben came to the Aachen Carnival . With the well-known 3 Atömchen from the region, he made recordings in the recording studio of the Dutch arranger and producer Jan Theelen. During this time he composed and wrote many of his own carnival hits, including his biggest carnival hit, Who Once Was in Aachen, in 1985 , which was sung by numerous other performers after him and which has become a classic of the Aachen Carnival.

Walter Sieben lives in Aachen and is married. His brother Heinz Sieben was also successful as a band leader and singer.
