Botho Lucas (born June 2, 1923 in Köslin , Pomerania ; † May 15, 2012 in Cologne ) was a German accordionist , composer and choir director .

Life

Lucas was the son of a Köslin master painter. He played the accordion from a young age and wrote smaller arrangements . He had his first appearances in the Kösliner Band 5 Tango , which played in the excursion restaurant Deutsche Eiche in Rogzow . In 1940 he went to Berlin. Here he had smaller appearances in musical quartets made up of violin duo, saxophone and accordion in Berlin clubs. In 1942 he was drafted into military service and in 1944 was taken prisoner by the Soviets .

In 1949 Lucas returned to Berlin and initially worked as a solo entertainer on the accordion. A little later he founded the Lucas Trio . Due to a death, the trio broke up. First Lucas founded a trio again, which he soon expanded into a pure vocal quartet. In addition to Lucas, this formation included tenor Bernd Golonsky, baritone Günter Kallmann and bassist Ralf Paulsen .

In 1959 Lucas shifted his artistic focus from Berlin to Cologne, where he worked as a studio choir with his quartet for "Musikproduktion West". This resulted in the Botho Lucas Choir in 1961 . Lucas' greatest successes from this time include the Berlin Polka, the Christian song Thank you for this good morning , with which Martin Gotthard Schneider had previously won the competition for New Spiritual Songs of the Evangelical Academy Tutzing .

In addition to numerous well-known artists, Lucas also worked with various children's choirs and, as a manager and producer , looked after “ Die Sonntagskinder ” and the “Euro Cats”, to which Anke Engelke also belonged.

Lucas remained connected to his Pomeranian homeland, which came to Poland after World War II. A few years before his death, he designed a CD for his compatriots who had been expelled from Köslin. His partner said after his death: "Half of his soul has always stayed in Pomerania".
