Walter Szurovy

Walter Szurovy (born May 28, 1910 in Vienna , † November 4, 2001 in New York ) was an Austro-American actor.

life and career

Walter Szurovy began his acting career on the Viennese theater stages and took on roles at the Theater in der Josefstadt , the State Opera in Prague and at the Salzburg Festival . He made his first film appearances in the late 1930s, including supporting roles in Géza von Bolváry's Mirror of Life (1938) and Erich Engels Hotel Sacher (1939). Shortly after these film appearances and with the beginning of the Second World War, Szurovy fled to the United States. There he founded his Polk Szurovy agency in Hollywood in 1941. Under the name Walter Molnar , he played the Nazi resistance fighter Paul du Bursac in 1944 to have and not have on the side of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall . It was his only appearance in a Hollywood film. He made his last film Counterfeiters at Work in 1950 in the Federal Republic of Germany.

In 1939 he married the American opera singer Risë Stevens . They remained married at the age of 91 until Szurovy's death in 2001. Their son is the actor Nicolas Surovy (* 1944), who appeared in films such as Forever Young . After the end of his acting career, Szurovy worked as a manager for his wife, who had a very successful and long career. In later years, Szurovy also managed Erich Leinsdorf .
