Have and Have Not (Original title: To Have and Have Not ) is a 1944 directed by Howard Hawks turned American feature film with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in the lead roles. The film is based on the novel To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway .

action

Martinique in the summer of 1940, shortly after France's defeat by Nazi Germany. The rough sailor Harry Morgan leads tourists around in his boat near the capital Fort-de-France , with the unskillful help of his drunkard friend Eddie. Harry has a cynical attitude towards life and, despite requests, refuses to smuggle people who fled the Nazis for the French Resistance . Instead, he has come to terms with the local representatives of the Vichy regime . One evening he meets the young American Marie Browning in the hotel. She is stranded and is doing more badly than right through life. Harry's client Johnson still owes him $ 825, but he won't be able to pay him until the bank opens again tomorrow. When Marie steals Johnson's wallet, Harry confronts it and they fall in love. In Johnson's wallet there are $ 1,400 in travelers checks and a plane ticket for the next morning. Harry demands that Johnson pay him immediately, but Johnson is killed in a skirmish between the French police and the Resistance. Harry and other hotel residents are interrogated and the police take away his money and ID.

Harry is torn out of this lethargy out of love for Marie. He agrees to help the Nazi resistance fighters, but only to get money to return his loved one to the United States. For the hotel owner Frenchy he smuggles the persecuted couple Hélène and Paul de Bursac at night, whereby his boat barely escapes the coast guard. Paul de Bursac is shot and has to be treated by Harry. Harry is asked by the Bursacs if he could take on another assignment for the resistance, but refuses. Meanwhile, Marie doesn't want to leave the island without Harry. The next day, Harry is in trouble as the police believe they recognized his boat the previous night. He then threatens Police Chief Captain Renard with a gun. Renard is forced to issue passports for Harry, Marie, Eddie, and the Bursacs. In the final scene, everyone on Harry's boat leaves the island to help the French Resistance with a new assignment.

background

Lauren Bacall, then 19, made her film debut here. She was discovered by director Howard Hawks after he and his wife Nancy saw her on the cover of Harper's Bazaar . After Hawks became convinced of Bacall's acting skills, he got her signed for the role. In the movie, Harry calls her "Slim" while Marie calls him "Steve". These were the nicknames Hawks and his wife used among themselves. To have and not to have formed the first joint collaboration between Humphrey Bogart and Bacall, who fell in love while filming. Two years later both shot the thriller Dead Sleeping again, directed by Howard Hawks , which also achieved classic status.

The film features several famous scenes, such as when Bacall's Marie Browning asks Bogart played Morgan for a fire ( "Anybody got a match?" ). The scene in which she tells him to whistle when he needs it ( "You know how to whistle, don't you Steve? You just put your lips together and ... blow" ) also became legendary . Although Bacall's character in this famous quote looks casual and self-confident, according to Bacall, she only played the scene out of uncertainty.

To have and not to have several parallels to Casablanca , which was filmed two years earlier with Bogart in the lead role. Both films are set under the rule of the Vichy regime and Bogart's characters change through love from seemingly indifferent men to resistance fighters. As in Casablanca, the figure of a piano player also appears in a supporting role, although there was no piano player in Hemingway's original. In addition to Bogart, the supporting actors Marcel Dalio and Dan Seymur also played minor roles in Casablanca .

The film song How Little We Know was written by Hoagy Carmichael , the lyrics are by Johnny Mercer .
