life and career
Walter Sande took music lessons from early childhood and left college to organize his own band. For several years he worked as music director for the West Coast Fox Theater chain , which was part of the 20th Century Fox film studio . From 1938 Sande worked as a film actor, although in his early years he mostly only took on small roles that were not mentioned in the credits (for example in the classic films Mr. Smith goes to Washington and Citizen Kane ). He had his first major appearances in cheaply produced film series such as The Iron Claw (1941) and Don Winslow of the Navy (1942), in each of which he played the comic sidekick of the main character. In many of his more than 270 film and television appearances, Sande also embodied serious authority figures such as police officers, sheriffs and lawyers.
He had one of his first major roles in Howard Hawks ' classic film, haben und nichthaben , in 1944 , in which he was a fraudulent fisherman in a fight with Humphrey Bogart's main character. Other notable supporting roles were as Little John in the Robin Hood film Robin Hood's Great Love (1948), as an attorney for Montgomery Clift's main character in the multi-Oscar-winning drama A Place in the Sun (1951), as a policeman in the Science Fiction classic Invasion of Mars (1953) and as sheriff in the star-studded western The Last Train from Gun Hill (1959) alongside Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn . From the mid-1950s, Sande shifted increasingly to roles on US television, where he also played one of the leading roles in the sitcom The Adventures of Tugboat Annie (1958) as Captain Bullwinkle . Sande stood in front of the camera practically until his death and took on guest roles in series classics such as Bonanza , Verschollen Between Strange Worlds , Smoking Colts , Perry Mason , The Seaview - On a Secret Mission and Solo for ONCEL He died in November 1971 at the age of 65 a heart attack.
