Walter Tautschnig

Walter Tautschnig (born January 14, 1917 in Villach ; † October 25, 2008 in Vienna ) was director of the institute and president of the Vienna Boys' Choir from 1955 to 1983 .

Life

In addition to his schooling in Klagenfurt and Vienna, Tautschnig was himself a Vienna Boys' Choir from 1927 to 1931. He studied law at the University of Vienna , and during his studies he worked as an educator and travel companion for the Boys' Choir. In 1939 he received his doctorate and was then employed by the Carinthian state government. During the Second World War he was stationed as a medic in Munich. After the end of the war he worked again as a lawyer in the Carinthian state government and was also an advisor to the then head of the Boys' Choir, Josef Schnitt. Together with him, he created the new legal basis for the Vienna Boys' Choir Association.

After his death, Tautschnig was appointed director of the boys' choir in 1955. Under his leadership, he ensured the economic and artistic independence of the association by expanding its tours and had the school and boarding school, which opened in 1974, built in Vienna. Until 1997 he still held the position of President.

Tautschnig has received several awards for his achievements, in 1962 he was awarded the German Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and in 1976 the Great Silver Medal of Honor of the Republic of Austria and the Silver Medal of Honor of the State of Vienna .
