Walter Unger (born May 30, 1943 in Gablonz , Sudetenland ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and lawyer .

After most of the German residents were expelled from Gablonz due to the Beneš decrees , Unger's family came to Upper Hesse . He studied law at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . There he received his doctorate in 1971 with the dissertation The requirements of the Basic Law on the structure of supranational communities . Unger worked in the Wiesbaden city ​​administration from 1973 to 1980 . Here he acted, among other things, as head of the public order office .

On May 1st, 1980 he took over the office of the First City Council as well as that of the building department of the city of Maintal . In March 1983 he became the new mayor of the city of Maintal, replacing his party colleague Erwin Henkel . Unger himself remained mayor until 1995. After 12 years in office, he decided not to run for mayoral elections. In the 1995 election, the first direct election in Maintal, Erhard Rohrbach ( CDU ) was elected as his successor.

After the end of his political career, Unger has been working as a lawyer in Maintal since 1995 and, among other things, advises municipalities on administrative reform issues. He also worked legally for the city of Maintal. For the communal community center for administrative management (KGSt) he participated in the preparation of various expert opinions and reports, was a member of the board of directors and the expert committee for personnel issues.

In 2003 Unger represented the lawsuit against the mayor's runoff election that took place in September . In 2005, the action was dismissed by the Seventh Chamber of the Frankfurt am Main Administrative Court.
