Walter Versell (born January 24, 1891 in Chur ; † May 1, 1989 , reformed , resident in Chur and Rodels ) was a Swiss civil engineer .

Life

Walter Versell was born on January 24, 1891, the son of the hammer smith and later chief of the Chur City Police, Anton Versell and Elisabeth Rudolfine, née Eggenstein. Walter Versell initially obtained a degree in civil engineering from the ETH Zurich , later he was employed from 1918 to 1936 as secretary of the Rhine Association for the Rhine region of Graubünden and St. Gallen . He also ran his own engineering office in Chur from 1925 to 1945. From 1945 to 1959 he was responsible for large hydropower plants as a water management engineer for the canton of Graubünden .

Walter Versell was married to Martha, the daughter of the grocer Eugen Hasler. He died on May 1, 1989 at the age of 98 in Chur.

Walter Versell was unusually versatile. In 1928, for example, he had the Vorderrhein Bridge built in front of Tavanasa and in 1934 the wide-span market hall in Chur. In 1947 Versell launched the idea of ​​the Valle di Lei reservoir as a replacement for the controversial Splügenwerk and, together with the cantonal chief engineer Abraham Schmid, developed the San Bernardino road tunnel project between 1951 and 1960 .
