Tavanasa

Tavanasa , a street village of around 600 meters in length, lies a little lower than Danis in the valley floor of the Vorderrhein on the right side of the river at an altitude of 788 m. ü. M.

The place was mentioned in a document by Bishop Tello in 765 as Abbatissae , in 1470 as Thafanatzen . After 1185, the Petersbach, east of Tavanasa, formed the eastern border of the Cadi , the region around Disentis / Mustér , located up the valley .

The school children from Tavanasa attend school either in Danis on the other side of the river or in Breil / Brigels.

Immediately above Tavanasa are the ruins of Heidenberg Castle on an almost inaccessible boulder . This is located in the far-reaching municipality of Obersaxen .

In 2015 Tavanasa - next to Sagogn one of the few places mentioned by Bishop Tello in his will - celebrated its 1250th anniversary, among other things with an exhibition and an open-air theater. Most recently Tavanasa became known through the work of the writer Arno Camenisch .

Transport and economy

Danis-Tavanasa has been connected by the cantonal road to Brigels, which is around 350 meters higher, since 1890. Danis-Tavanasa is also connected to Brigels by a post bus line. The station of the Rhaetian Railway Tavanasa-Breil / Brigels has been located north of the village since 1912 .

In 1905 the Bernese engineer and bridge builder Robert Maillart designed a bridge over the Rhine between Tavanasa and Danis, his first three-hinged box girder, which was largely destroyed by a debris flow in 1927 . The successor bridge is a construction from 1928 by the Chur engineer Walter Versell and has only been available to pedestrians and cyclists since autumn 2016. The current bridge over the Vorderrhein was opened on September 30, 2016, about 100 m upstream.

Danis-Tavanasa has been important to the electrical industry since 1946. The Axpo AG maintains talaufwärts a balancing reservoir of the power plant Tavanasa-Obersaxen.
