Walter Lee White (born July 19, 1951 in Charlottesville , Virginia - † April 10, 2019 ) was an American American football player. He played five seasons on the tight end position for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL).
Career
White played college football at Mesa Junior College in Colorado and then at the University of Maryland .
White was selected in the third round of the 1975 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers . After he injured himself there, however, he was released before the start of the season, whereupon the Kansas City Chiefs took him in via the waiver system . Here he won the Mack Lee Hill Award for best chiefs rookie of the 1975 season . In his sophomore year, he made the NFL top 10 in captured yards and touchdowns. He caught 47 passes for 808 yards and 7 touchdowns that year, helping the Chiefs make the second best passing offense in the league. In 1978 he started in all games for the first time. In a total of five seasons with the Chiefs, White played 63 games, 37 of them from the start. He caught 163 passes for 2,396 yards and 16 touchdowns. Both the number of touchdowns and the yards caught are each the third-best value for a chiefs tight end.
After football, he worked for Commerce Bank in Kansas City for 22 years . Most recently, he was vice president of the investment division. In 1989, White co-founded the Kansas City Ambassadors , a group of former Chiefs players and officials who represented the Chiefs at various events. He was also the association's first president.
In April 2019, White died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 67.
