Walter de Lacy (* 1046 in Lassy ; † March 22, 1085 in Herefordshire ) was a member of a Norman noble family and came to England in the wake of William the Conqueror .

The de Lacy family derives its name from the town of Lassy in the Calvados department in Normandy . Walter de Lacy (also written Lascy or Laci), his brother Ilbert, the sons of Hugh de Lacy (1020-1049) and Emma de Bois L'Eveque came from this place.

Together with his brother Ilbert, Walter de Lacy Wilhelm accompanied the conqueror, Duke of Normandy, on his campaign to England and took part in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. He was rewarded with possessions in the border region of Wales , namely in Herefordshire , and in 1071 was appointed one of the Norman barons. Ilbert got the castle and city of Pontefract in York .

Walter began building a number of towns and fortifications along the Welsh border. One of the most beautifully situated and best fortified ancestral seats of the descendants of Walter de Lacy was Ludlow Castle on the banks of the Teme River.

Walter de Lacy was married to Adline Talbot . Although Walter had three sons, of whom first Roger in 1089 and after his death his brother Hugh (1072–1115) inherited their father, they left no heirs. Therefore, Gilbert (around 1100–1163), the son of Walter's daughter Emmaline, took the family name of his mother and continued the title as the fourth Baron de Lacy.

Walter de Lacy died in 1085 after falling from the scaffolding while working on a church he had donated. He is buried in Gloucester Cathedral.

He is not to be confused with his great-great-grandson Walter de Lacy (1172-1241), the 2nd Lord of Meath and brother of Hugh de Lacy, 1st Earl of Ulster .
