Walther John , sometimes also Walter John (born May 4, 1893 in Köslin , † August 25, 1971 in Göttingen ) was a German teacher and classical philologist .

Life

After attending school in his hometown of Köslin, John studied Classical Philology and German Studies in Halle from 1912, and in Berlin from 1914. From 1915 to 1918 he did military service in the military administration on the Eastern Front, from 1916 in the military government of Courland . In 1919 he resumed his studies in Greifswald and passed the first state examination for teaching in 1920, and the second state examination in 1921 after the seminar year at the Gymnasium Köslin. In 1922 he received his doctorate in Greifswald with Johannes Mewaldt with a thesis on Thucydides . For a while he was assistant to the archaeologist Erich Pernice in Greifswald and held language courses in Latin and Greek, but in 1925 he switched to teaching, first in Treptow an der Rega , and from 1927 in Köslin, where he became a teacher in 1929. In 1935 John went to the later Max Planck Gymnasium in Göttingen as director (until 1945) . In 1958 he was retired.

Among other things, John dealt scientifically with ancient medicine ( Galen ), the late ancient poet Ausonius , the annals of Tacitus and the politics of Germania in the Augustan era. He wrote several works on Publius Quinctilius Varus , including an extensive article for Paulys Realencyclopadie der classical antiquity . Since 1958 he was Konrat Ziegler's co-editor for this reference work; however, only two volumes appeared, which John co-supervised before illness prevented further work.
