Walther's parents were previously unnamed noblemen. His older brother was Konrad I. vom (ab dem) Graben . He was married to a Gertraud, with whom he had four offspring:

  • Reinprecht III. The elder from Graben , Herr von Alt-Grabenhofen, caretaker (burgrave) of Spital am Pyhrn
  • Chuntz [Conrad] vom Graben (called 1410), knight
  • Georg vom Graben († 1439), knight
  • Anna vom Graben (called 1331), who was a Dominican nun

Konrad II vom (from the) Graben , who could have acted as ancestor of the Counts and Princely Family of the Orsini-Rosenbergs , was one of his nephews. Konrad's brother-in-law was knight Dytmar von Zebing.

Act

Walther can be found in various documents. It was first mentioned together with his brother Konrad on January 19, 1259 (as de Valle ). The brothers were citizens of the city of Graz, but knightly class ( milites ). Walter and Konrad vom Graben called themselves de Valle, ie von Thal , in 1259 , and owned an estate or other property not far from Graz, from which the name of today's municipality of Thal comes. The box book of the Rein monastery from 1450 reports "Subscripti habent fraternitatem: de Valle videlicet von dem Graben". The brothers must have shared their property; Konrad kept Am Graben in Graz with the Rosenberg and Alt-Grabenhofen, and Walter kept the one in Thal. Walther built Unterthal Castle there in the middle of the 13th century .

The von Walther family had several spellings, for example he calls himself exclusively de Valle in Latin documents and exclusively Grabner in German documents , but never Thal or Graben . These names are considered synonyms and were alternately carried, used and assigned by the family. In 1278 he appears in the deed of foundation to the Graz Franciscan order as the first witness, and sealed with dominus Waltherus miles de Grabenae . In a document from 1283 Walther is clearly attested as dominus Waltherus de Graben as the brother of Conrad I von Graben. It is also documented in documents from Rein Abbey . Here Walther appeared as the founder of masses, including his own commemorative mass. 1318 Walther was the Seckauer Bishop with the village Pachern bei Graz invested . In 1331, after Walther's death, his daughter Anna entered the Dominican convent in Graz. Walther's widow sealed the corresponding certificate with the trench family coat of arms, the sloping beam, which was used by the Conradinian line of the Lords of the Graben am Graben in Carniola.
