Waltraud Rennebaum (* in Bochum ) is a German singer ( mezzo-soprano ) who specializes in sacred music in the Hebrew language .

Life and education

Waltraud Rennebaum comes from a musically very active family. She trained as a classical orchestra musician (major in horn ) at the music academies in Detmold , Cologne and Düsseldorf ; she played in various orchestras and chamber music ensembles. However, her passion was increasingly singing, which is why she decided to become a singer.

Today she lives in the Bergisches Land , near Cologne .

Artistic work

In 1994 Waltraud Rennebaum founded the ensemble SHOSHAN , with which she has given concerts in a changing line-up at home and abroad and has recorded several solo albums. The focus of her artistic activity is on Hebrew-Jewish music; their interpretations of the Psalms in the original language of the Bible are a unique selling point in German-speaking countries. Her husband, the pianist and arranger Ray Rennebaum, and the Essen flautist Heike Zehe are permanent members of her ensemble. For her album Shabbat , released in 2014, she worked for the first time with the French clarinetist Florent Héau from Paris. Years of preoccupation with Jewish music and the Old Testament psalms as well as several years of private study in Hebrew with the Düsseldorf Judaist Edna Schwarz led to the creation of her own song compositions and to theme concerts with Hebrew titles such as "Jerushalaim", "Tehilim", "Ma'alot" and "Shabbat". Waltraud Rennebaum is the owner of Shoshanim-Musikverlag, which has been publishing CDs, songbooks and scores with psalms in Hebrew since 1998.

repertoire

The ensemble SHOSHAN, whose Hebrew name means "lily", combines the genre of the classical art song with the genre of Jewish folklore. In addition to their own psalm settings, the song repertoire also includes songs from the synagogue and Jewish-Israeli traditionals. Instrumental works for piano solo and for the instrumentation flute and piano are also part of the concert repertoire.
