Waltzing in the Clouds is a song that Robert Stolz entitled Singing, sounding happiness calling you originally for the German film Spring Parade of 1934 had composed on which the Romance Spring Parade from 1940 is based in which the song was used and received an Oscar nomination. The English text is from Gus Kahn . Deanna Durbin , who played the lead role alongside Robert Cummings , then performed the song in the film both alone and in the company of Robert Cummings. In addition to the nomination for “Best Song”, the film received three other nominations for an Oscar .

The song tells of how someone who has so far stood firmly on the ground, hears a waltz melody and sees a certain person smile and floats into a dream world and waltzes with this person high in the clouds far away from everything dances.

Waltzing in the Clouds was released by Brunswick (DL 2093 0325-A), sung by Deanna Durbin, accompanied by Charles Previn & his orchestra.

Awards

1941 was Waltzing in the Clouds in the category "Best Song" for a Oscar nomination. However, the award went to Leigh Harline and Ned Washington for their song When You Wish Upon A Star from the cartoon Pinocchio .

Cover versions

The English pop singer Anne Shelton sang the song as did Nana Mouskouri (1982).

The soprano Julia Migenes and the tenor Sebastian Reinthaller released the CD Waltzing in the Clouds - "The Music of Robert Stolz", which contains the song.

The British Hit Singles (Jan. 1940-Dec. 1949) was Waltzing in the Clouds in the version with Deanna Durbin ranked 19th.
