The Motorola Moto X (European model number: XT1052) is a smartphone from Motorola that was released in August 2013 . Special features are the voice control, which can also be used in standby mode, the active display , which provides information about incoming messages and the time even when the device is switched off, and the "Moto Maker", with which the color of the device can be configured before purchase.

The successor model with a 5.2-inch screen, also known as the Moto X, appeared in September 2014.

Instead of a 3rd generation Moto X, two successor models were presented on July 28, 2015. The Moto X Style is now the high-end device, while the Moto X Play is in the middle class.

General

The Moto X is Motorola's first smartphone since it was acquired by Google . It was first published in August 2013 for the USA , Canada and Latin America and in February 2014 for Great Britain and Northern Ireland , France and Germany . With the Moto Maker , the Moto X could be configured with an individualized housing, which caused a sensation at the launch. In Europe, the Moto X initially appeared only in a black and a white version and with 16 GB of storage. From July 1, 2014, the Moto X was also configurable with the Moto Maker when purchased via Phonehouse in Germany . In addition to the model with 16 GB memory, the 32 GB version was also available.

At first it was unusual that the models configured via Moto Maker were not manufactured in Asia like other smartphones , but in the USA . In May 2014, Motorola closed its manufacturing facility in the United States.

particularities

hardware

The smartphone has a total of eight computing cores (“Motorola X8 Mobile Computing System”): a dual-core main processor, a quad-core graphics processor and two additional cores for touchless voice control and context awareness .

One of Motorola's design goals was to use a narrow frame to maximize the ratio of display area to total area. As of February 2014, the share of the 4.7-inch screen in the total surface was only exceeded by the Samsung Galaxy S4 (72.1%) and the LG G2 (75.7%) at 72% . However, part of the display is mostly taken up by the onscreen buttons that Google plans to replace the softkeys.

A nano-coating makes the device officially splash-proof. In fact, the Moto X is even waterproof.

The SIM card is a nano- SIM , which is inserted into a tray on the left side. A Bosch -BMP180 barometer helps the Global Positioning System to determine your position more quickly. A thermometer is also installed. However, an app for reading out the barometer and thermometer must be installed manually.

It supports the latest WLAN standard IEEE 802.11ac . Motorola offers an NFC tag as an attachable clip that can be used to unlock the screen via NFC. An FM - radio was not installed.

Touchless control

With the voice command “OK, Google Now”, the Moto X can be operated extensively by voice at any time. Operation is calibrated to your own voice so that no one else has access. Examples of voice commands include “Find phone” (which emits an acoustic and visual signal that makes it easier to find the device) or “Set the alarm clock to 8:30 am”. A disadvantage is that linguistic variations of the commands are not recognized, so you have to have the exact command in mind. Bypassing the screen lock using voice control must be activated explicitly in the settings.

The chip for “context awareness” can, for example, determine whether the smartphone is in the trouser pocket and whether it is being pulled out of the trouser pocket or whether the user is driving a car. The Motorola Assist app can be used to define how the phone should behave when driving.

Active display

Using the “Active Display”, the smartphone can display information such as the time and notifications, even when it is in standby mode. This is made possible by AMOLED technology, which does not require any electricity to display black pixels and therefore only has a minimal load on the battery. The apps from which the messages are shown on the active display can be configured in the settings.

The information is not displayed permanently, but only when the context awareness processor core detects that there is a need for information, for example when the device is taken out of your pocket or is moved.

Android updates

When it was released, the Moto X offered the latest Android version 4.2 "Jelly Bean", which, in contrast to other manufacturers, is almost unchanged. This is intended to provide updates more quickly. In November 2013 the update to Android version 4.4 “KitKat” was released. An update to Android 5.1 “Lollipop” was released in June 2015. A short time later, Motorola provided a patch as part of the Android security vulnerability “ Stagefright ”, which became known in July 2015 , which eliminated some of the vulnerabilities . Another update for the Moto X was released in May 2016, which contains the Android 5.1 security updates up to April 2016.

Extras

When you buy it, you get 50 GB of cloud storage from Google Drive for two years. Motorola offers this, as there is no way to expand the memory of the Moto X. This extra must be activated within 30 days. Motorola has given the Moto X a migration assistant that transfers all data and settings from the old Android smartphone to the new one. To do this, the migration assistant must be installed on the old smartphone via the Google Play Store . The Motorola Connect application displays text messages and calls in the Chrome browser on the desktop computer .

camera

Motorola paid particular attention to the camera (OmniVision OV10820). It has a relatively large (1 / 2.6 inch) BSI sensor for high light sensitivity and a special RGBC filter. The distance between two camera pixels is 1.4 μm on the Moto X, compared to 1.1 μm on the Samsung Galaxy S4 and 2 μm on the HTC One .

The Quick Capture feature starts the camera app by shaking the smartphone twice, even in standby mode. This is made possible by the special processor core for motion monitoring.

The camera offers a slow motion function and a series of pictures. The front camera, like the rear camera, can record videos with a resolution of 1080p. It also offers 16: 9 recording, a panorama function, fourfold digital zoom, automatic HDR and tap to focus .

Setting options for ISO, brightness and white balance, however, are missing.

Evaluation and criticism

inside-handy.de praises the good size ratio of display and case in the Motorola Moto X test. In addition, the Moto X is certified as having a good working speed. The rather mediocre image quality for a 10 megapixel camera and the weak battery life are criticized.

Further disadvantages are the built-in battery and the missing SD card slot.
