Wanders German Proverbs Lexicon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Proverbs Lexicon is a five-volume reference work from the 19th century on the subject of proverbs .

The subtitle of the work: "A household treasure for the German people". It was published by the educator and revolutionary Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Wander . The five volumes of the work were each published with a preface and at different times. Wander wrote in the preface to the first volume that he was not sure whether he would have published the work had he known what work was connected with it (page IX). The last volume was edited by Joseph Bergmann. The work was published by FA Brockhaus .

In the preface to the first volume, Wander points out that the meaning of the proverb in a language is tremendously important . No “product of the human spirit” would have “attracted the attention of the educated more than the proverbs” (page III). For volume 1 alone, he needed just under 25 pages for the evidence of his sources. The five volumes contain around 250,000 entries. The lexicon focuses on German-speaking countries, but also includes foreign proverbs. Since it always points to parallel expressions in other European and non-European languages, it is one of the most universal and complete collections of proverbs and its rank can only be compared with the German dictionary of the Brothers Grimm .
