Wang Dongxing ( Chinese  汪东兴 ; January 1, 1916 ; † August 21, 2015 in Beijing ) was a Chinese communist politician and a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party .

Cultural Revolution and overthrow of the Gang of Four

Wang Dongxing was originally Mao Zedong's bodyguard . During the Cultural Revolution , he became a candidate for the Politburo and a member of the CCP Central Committee at the CCP's 9th Congress in April 1969 . Four years later, he became a member of the Politburo at the CPC's 10th Congress in August 1973.

As commander of the 8,341th special regiment of the Life Guards of the party leadership, he was instrumental in September and October 1976 at the fall of the Gang of Four involved, after the death of Mao Zedong wanted to seize power.

Standing Committee Member and Loss of Power

Under Mao's successor as chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) , Hua Guofeng , who had also succeeded the late Prime Minister Zhou Enlai since January , Wang became a member of the Politburo Standing Committee in August 1977 at the 11th Congress of the CCP of the Chinese Communist Party and was elected a Vice-Chairperson of the CCP along with Deng Xiaoping , Li Xiannian, and Ye Jianying . He was thus a member of the top leadership of the party leadership.

With Deng Xiaoping's growing influence, Wang lost his position as vice chairman of the party to Hu Yaobang in the late autumn of 1977 . In February 1980 he finally lost his seat on the Standing Committee of the Politburo before the next party congress.

At the 12th Congress of the CCP in 1982, in recognition of his role in the coup against the Gang of Four and as a token that political opponents are no longer persecuted, he was still elected as a candidate for the CCP Central Committee (CC) . After the 13th Party Congress in 1987, however, he left politics.
