Longitudinal axis
In technology , biology and other sciences , the longitudinal axis is the axis of a body that corresponds to the direction of its greatest extension. The longitudinal axis is often also an approximate axis of symmetry of the body. In vehicles , the longitudinal axis points to the front.

The rotation of technical axes or shafts usually takes place around their longitudinal axis.
In the case of rotations of celestial bodies, on the other hand, the rotary movement occurs in the majority of cases around the shortest axis. Physics and mechanics speak in this context of the axis of the greatest moment of inertia .
