Description of the elements
St. George is the patron saint of the cathedral chapter . He can be recognized by the George cross on the chest and flag. The shield is attributed to the noble Andechs-Meranien family . Saint George has two functions here: He is a common figure for the coat of arms of the city of Bamberg and a shield holder for the coat of arms of the Counts of Andechs-Meranien.
history
The first uses of the coat of arms in the form of a seal have been known since 1279 . In the course of the course, the common figure changed : in the 14th century it was Heinrich II. In the 15th and 16th centuries, however, the Bamberg lion can be found before St. George was depicted again. Likewise, the eagle was replaced by a lion in the shield or the small shield was completely missing.
