The Warsteiner Internationale Montgolfiade (WIM) is an internationally significant and largest European hot air balloon competition, which has been organized by the Warsteiner Brewery in Warstein in the Sauerland since 1986 . After it was held every two years in the early years, it has been held annually on the first weekend in September since 1996. In 2005 over 300 teams from all over Europe took part in the various championships. During the week of the event, there will be starts twice a day, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. Further attractions are the special shapes , which can be viewed on both weekends and theParaballooning competition that has been held three times so far. At the same time, the Montgolfiade is the second largest folk festival in the region with two to three hundred thousand spectators after the All Saints' Fair in Soest . The fairgrounds in the south of the city are particularly well attended during the so-called nightglow ( balloon glow ) and on the two Saturdays on which the opening and closing fireworks take place.

For the 250th anniversary of the brewery in 2003, some celebrities were invited to the Montgolfiade, who organized a show and sports program. According to the brewery, around 250,000 visitors came to the city of 30,000 that week.

The Warsteiner Internationale Montgolfiade 2013 was canceled due to a massive legionella infection that broke out in the city of Warstein and which affected over 160 people. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event planned for 2020 will take place without visitors as a pure balloon sport event without visitors.
