The Wartburg Stadium is a sports facility in the city of Eisenach in Thuringia . The home of FC Eisenach , who plays in the Oberliga Nordost Staffel Süd, is together with other sports and leisure facilities northwest of the city center on the grounds of the Katzenaue at the foot of the Michelskuppe and not far from the Hörsel .

history

The Wartburg Stadium was inaugurated on June 19, 1955 on the occasion of the 1st district gymnastics and sports festival. As a football and athletics stadium, it is equipped with a grass pitch as well as a running track as well as jumping and throwing facilities. The wooden grandstand and the natural stone walls to the right and left of it with the tower on the east side are striking. Due to the unusual architecture for the time it was built, the Wartburg Stadium was included in the monuments book of the Free State of Thuringia in January 2009 .

Structural development

After six years of construction, the stadium was inaugurated on June 19, 1955 with a public festival. It was created within the framework of the " national construction work " with the help of numerous volunteer citizens of Eisenach, the state invested 550,000 marks. The stadium only had standing room for the spectators, both on the small covered grandstand and on the crossbars in the curves and on the back straight.

In the 1990s, structural defects such as the lack of steps and loose panels on the standing bars became more and more serious. Since there was no money for the urgently needed renovation, the concrete steps in the curves and on the back straight were finally torn down in 1999 due to the risk of accidents and these areas were planted with greenery. The capacity of the stadium, which was previously specified as standing 15,000 to 20,000, fell rapidly to 4,520, of which 139 were seated.

In April 2002, at a meeting of the Eisenach city council, the foundation stone for the further development of the stadium was laid with the submission of a sports facility development plan. In the summer of 2003, the long jump facility was renewed in the first construction phase - but initially there was no money for further work. The next restructuring step could only take place in 2010 with the approval of funding from the economic stimulus package II . In the course of this, primarily new athletics facilities were built , with the new running tracks with tartan covering changing the appearance of the stadium the most. Today the stadium has six running tracks (400-meter circular tracks) as well as short-distance tracks (100-meter sprint and 110-meter hurdles), two high jump facilities, a shot put facility and other facilities for school, club and recreational sports. Since the last renovation, the stadium has been a type B competition facility.

Sporting highlights

After the 1956 adjustment to the calendar year based on the Soviet model, the game year of GDR football in 1961 was changed back to the old autumn-spring rhythm. As a transition, the 1961/62 season was played in three rounds: The teams met in their own stadium, in the opponent's stadium and on a neutral pitch. On November 18, 1961, the Wartburg Stadium was therefore the venue for a game in the GDR Oberliga ; 8,000 spectators saw the 2: 1 between BSG Motor Zwickau and SC Aufbau Magdeburg .

Some international comparisons also took place in the Wartburg Stadium. On September 26, 1967, 14,000 spectators saw the game of the B-national teams of the GDR and Hungary, which the GDR-Elf won 2-1. On August 2, 1971, the GDR national team defeated a selection from Iraq in an unofficial international match 11-0 in front of 9,000 spectators. Almost nine years later, the GDR junior team played against Bulgaria 3-0 here. Eisenach was the venue for the U-16 European Football Championship in 1990 . On May 19th the game between the representations of Denmark and Northern Ireland took place here, which the Danes won 6-0.

The national athletics teams of the CSSR and the GDR faced each other in July 1983 in the Wartburg Stadium.

In May 1988, the GDR archery championships were held.

The last big event in the Wartburg Stadium for the time being was the friendly match between Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach and SV Wartburgstadt Eisenach on May 26, 1993 in front of 2,700 spectators, in which Eisenach lost 6-2.
