What Eve thinks about Adam

What Eve thinks of Adam is a collection of satirical columns by the Dutch author and journalist Ina van der Beugel (1914–2003). The Dutch first edition appeared in 1946. From 1948 the new edition with drawings by the French cartoonist Jean Effel was successful. The German first edition was published in 1955 by Sanssouci Verlag ( Zurich ) and appeared in at least ten further editions until 1997.

In the 13 columns the author describes in a humorous way the "typical man" or husband in his special character traits, peculiarities and hobbies from the point of view of the woman or wife:

The booklet closes with the words: “And the ideal man - THAT does not exist. Thank God!"

Original edition

Ina van der Beugel first published the Dutch original edition Een vrouw over mannen in 1946 at De Boekerij ( Baarn ) under her pseudonym Jacquelientje Plof with drawings by Charles Boost (1907–1990). The book first became known with the drawings by Jean Effel in the 1948 edition, which this time was published by the same publisher under her real name. Further editions followed at least in 1949, 1951, 1953 (13th edition), 1955 and others up to 1958 (19th edition).

The counterpart to this title was published in 1946 as Een man over de vrouwen with drawings by Dick de Wilde by HAM Roelants (Koninklijke Nederlandsche Boekdrukkerij, Schiedam ) and in 1948 with the drawings by Jean Effel by De Boekerij (Baarn).

German language edition

The German-language edition What Eva thinks about Adam was translated by Lore Grages was first published in 1955 by Sanssouci Verlag (Zurich), ISBN 3-7254-0038-5 and ISBN 9783725400386 . Further editions appeared in the following decades at least in 1960, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1973 ( ISBN 3-7254-0037-7 ), 1977 ( ISBN 3725403104 ), 1985, 1992 ( ISBN 3-7254-1012-7 ) and since 1995 with Carl Hanser Verlag , the legal successor of the Sanssouci Verlag. The latest edition was brought onto the market by Carl Hanser Verlag in February 1997, ISBN 3446184678 and ISBN 978-3446184671 .

The counterpart to this title appeared at the same time in 1955 with drawings by Jean Effel as What Adam thinks about Eve in the Sanssouci Verlag (Zurich). There were also book editions with both titles together.
