The Waschbär Umweltversand is a mail order company for organic products, which was founded in 1987 in Freiburg im Breisgau . Approx. 7000 items from the fields of natural textiles (also made from certified organic cotton and certified according to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)), linen, shoes, natural cosmetics (with BDIH seal), natural furniture (made of wood from sustainable forestry) and household items as well as an extra range for babies and expectant mothers.

history

Raccoon has been particularly committed to environmental protection since it was founded . When Leo Pröstler was founded in 1987 , the company initially sold an eco-cleaning box, and from 1993 also natural textiles. It was involved in wind farms as early as the mid-1990s. It has also supported reforestation programs and solar projects since then.

In 2000, Raccoon took over the companies Alb Natur Versandhandel and Alb Natur Retail, which were in financial difficulties . According to the then managing director Leo Pröstler, this takeover as well as burdens from a new logistics center and a decline in the demand for textiles led Raccoon to file for bankruptcy in 2001 . In 2002 a group of investors with the Triodos Venture Capital Fund as the main investor took over the company and continued to run it as part of the Triaz group of companies. The Triaz Group also includes the mail order companies Vivanda GmbH (formerly Panda Versand GmbH ) and PranaHaus GmbH . Since 2001 the company has been managed by Ernst Schütz, who has also been the owner since 2007.

In 2005, Waschbär developed the “Green Package” together with the logistics service provider DHL .

In 2005, raccoon received the Ethics in Business Award for its "outstanding commitment to the environment and social issues as a pioneer in ethical action". Raccoon's ethical understanding includes responsibility for the professional training of young people or the involvement of employees in the company's success as well as family-friendly home and part-time jobs. A 50% share of women at management level, fair trade and socially acceptable working conditions should also show the self-image of the Freiburg company. The company is a member of the Fair Wear Foundation and is actively committed to social working conditions worldwide.

In 2008, Raccoon donated part of the sales proceeds to the SOS Children's Villages Association . This supported the renovation of the children's village in Sulzburg, with EUR 20,000 being handed over to the children's village.

To mark the company's 25th anniversary, Waschbär initiated and financed an “Experience Field for the Senses” in Freiburg to the tune of 150,000 euros, which is intended to awaken nature awareness. The Nistplatz e. V. , who has looked after the field of experience ever since.

Today, Raccoon claims to have a neutral CO 2 balance . The British company The Carbon Neutral Company calculates all CO 2 emissions for the Freiburg mail order company that arise in the company or as a result of the company's actions. This includes the production and dispatch of catalogs, promotional mailings and packages as well as all returns. The company buildings, company cars and business trips and waste are also included.

In March 2016, the purchase agreement for a plot of land measuring nine soccer fields in Kenzingen was signed for two million euros . The Triaz Group plans to operate its business from there from 2021. In Freiburg there was no growth opportunity at the price. After the move, the number of employees is expected to grow from 360 to 500. The company has an annual turnover of 80 million euros.

At the mail order advisor congress on November 8, 2017 in the Kurhaus Wiesbaden .waschbaer.de was named "Online Shop of the Year - 2017".

Raccoon supports the popular initiative "Save the bees" founded in 2019 - an alliance for the protection of species.
