Waset is the name of the 4th Upper Egyptian Gau , one of the traditional administrative units of the ancient Egyptian state. The northern border to the 5th Gau Netjerui was probably north of Gurna . Nechen joined to the south . Waset is mentioned for the first time in one of the Mykerinus triads . In the Gauliste of Sesostris a length of about 32.7 km is given. During the 18th dynasty the capital was moved from Hermonthis to Thebes . Before the Ramesside period , Thebes and Pathyris had formed two subdistricts of Waset, from which the Theban Gau ( Peri Thebas ) and the Gau Pathyrites developed in the late period . In Roman times both were reunited to form a Gau Hermonthites and the capital moved back to Hermonthis.
