The Washington Companies is a US-American group of companies that is active, among other things, in rail and sea transport, aviation technology and the coal and steel industry.

history

In 1964, Dennis Washington founded the Washington Construction Company , which repaired roads for the United States Forest Service . Over the years, the range of services expanded and the Washington Construction Company helped complete entire sections of the interstate and provided construction services to the mining industry. The resulting corporate network was renamed the Washington Contractors Group , from which the Washington Construction Group developed. This included the group's classic construction activities. From the 1970s onwards, the group of companies increasingly diversified its field of activity and took over various companies in the transport sector, mining and machine trading.

In 1996 the Washington Construction Group took over the formerly much larger conglomerate Morrison-Knudsen , which had to file for bankruptcy shortly before. The merged company took the name Washington Group International. The acquisition of the construction division of the Raytheon Group brought Washington Group International itself into serious financial difficulties in 2001 due to undiscovered liabilities of the former Raytheon subsidiary, which resulted in the bankruptcy of Washington Group International. After a reorganization, the company was sold to URS Corporation in 2007 .

All other parts of the conglomerate, which remained under the control of Dennis Washington, were not affected by the bankruptcy. These are now part of The Washington Companies.
