Wasini is located southeast of mainland Kenya in the Indian Ocean . The closest town on the mainland is Shimone, which can be reached by ferry from the island .

The two places on the island are Wasini Village in the west of the island and Mkwiro in the east of the island.
population
A large part of the population belongs to the Vumba ethnic group. Due to tourism, which made the island more economically attractive, some Swahili came from the mainland, so that they made up 11% of the population in 2008. This number declined in the following years due to weaker tourist numbers.
Infrastructure
There are no roads or cars on the island. Wasini Village has a primary school and a small port from where the ferry to Shimone leaves.
economy
A large part of the population is engaged in fishing , which consists mainly of catching red mullets , parrotfish , rays , sebastes , octopuses , lobsters , surgeonfish and crabs . Wasini Island also attracts tourists, with the main attraction being the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park . Tourists can also snorkel and take part in dolphin tours.
