Water tank in Mühlbach

The water tank in Muehlbach , a suburb of Epping in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1912 and is due to its unusual facade design as a cultural monument under monument protection .

history

Population growth, increased livestock farming and other factors increased the pollution of the groundwater required to meet the needs of Mühlbach at the end of the 19th century. The lowering of some wells and the recasting of springs did nothing to improve the water quality. A petition from the citizens' assembly on January 6, 1910 with a request for the construction of a local water pipe for the place was approved by the municipal council and approved funds for the search for suitable sources for a water supply. In the same year, continuous measurements were made of the heavily precipitation-dependent pouring Käsbrunnenquelle and Brunnenstubenquelle , which together poured between 4 and 9 liters per second, with an average of 4.86 liters per second in summer and autumn. The amount was considered sufficient, so the construction of two water tanks was started to ensure constant water pressure for the customers.

In Mühlbach, several quarries with attached stonemasons have flourished since the late 19th century, which had a lasting impact on construction activity in the area around 1900. Numerous ornate sandstone buildings in the center of Mühlbach, including the town hall from 1903 with its urban appearance, are evidence of this architecture. Local quarries and stonemasons were also used to build the necessary water tanks, and a representative execution was decided.

The neoclassical design of the water tank on Ostendgasse with its triangular gable supported by six columns, which can be seen from afar, received the water from the spring. For the source of the Käsbrunnen, a further collecting container was also built by local stonemasons in the forest above the Denkmalstrasse. At the same time as the construction of the tanks, the pipe work was carried out on site, for which 17 Italian workers, most of them from Belluno , had been recruited due to the lack of construction workers . In addition, hydrants were also erected, as the water pressure in the tanks was sufficient to fight fires at the height of the houses. After the water supply regulations were passed on October 22, 1912, the plant went into operation.

The system, made up of the tanks built in 1912 and the pipes laid at the same time, served its purpose for around 50 years before the increased water consumption of the population, which grew after the Second World War, and the frequent water pipe bursts caused by the old gate valves led to a fundamental renovation of the pipes in the 1960s made necessary.
